Talk on Siegried Sassoon Wednesday 22 September 2010

A packed room in the Cheshire Cheese was where we heard a most moving account of the life and work of Siegfried Sassoon given by Dennis Silk. Dennis, who was Warden of Radley College and a first class cricketer who led a number of MCC tours abroad, was a long term friend of Sassoon and gave us many vignettes of the poet's later life. He recalled particularly discussing the events during the Great War that gave rise to the composition of the poems and their later emendations.

We sat spellbound as we listened to our speaker tell how Sassoon wrote some of his most important and memorable poems such as The General, On Passing The New Menin Gate, Everyone Sang and others.

It was a tour de force by Dennis who clearly spoke from a deep admiration and respect for both the poetry and the man. The evening was a classic Bowyer event that will long remain in our memories: a fascinating talk, good fellowship and good craic coming together to create a most enjoyable occasion.
