Barbara Megson becomes a Freeman of the City

On Tuesday 10 January 2012 the Master Howard Mundy, Upper Warden Michael Wren, Renter Warden Rev John Hayton, Past Master Richard Model, the Clerk Richard Sawyer and the Muniments Committee met to celebrate the award of the Freedom of the City to Barbara Megson. The normal business of the committee was abandoned so that we could concentrate on thanking Barbara for her many years of work on the history of the Company.

Sinclair Rogers spoke how Barbara was recruited to write the history of the Company after retiring from public service. Since then she has been a fund of help, information and guidance to the Muniments Committee and in 2010 transcribed the Company's earliest minute book covering the years 1679 to 1727.

The meeting adjourned to the Guildhall where Barbara was presented with her certificate as a freeman. The ceremony was most pleasant and informal yet appropriate; the chamberlain gave a brief history of recent recipients of the freedom in the year gone by these included Dame Judy Dench and King Michael of Romania.
