Bowyers' Prize Day 1 July

On the sunny Saturday afternoon of 1 July, the Master was pleased to present the Bowyers' Prize Day Medals at the Royal Toxophilite Society's Archery Lodge in Burnham, to the gentlemen's and ladies' winners and runners-up in the categories of recurve and compound bows.

The event is an invitational to champion archers from all over the country, and a very high-quality entry was achieved this year by the Tox's new Event Organiser, Gemma Underwood. The Master is pictured here awarding a silver medal to Olympic poster-girl Amy Oliver, who had brought her very proud grandfather down from Yorkshire to watch - an archer himself who had always wanted to visit the Royal Tox.

The winners were Naomi Folkard in Ladies' Recurve (with Amy 2nd), John Shales in Gents' Recurve, Lucy O'Sullivan in Ladies' Compound and Richard Kerr in Gents' Compound.

Mercian Regiment at Crich

Each year on the first Sunday in July a Pilgrimage and Service is held at the Mercian Regiment's War Memorial, the tower on Crich Hill in Derbyshire, where members of the Regiment, both old and new, gather to pay their respects and meet up with comrades. It was originally the memorial of the antecedent Sherwood Foresters' Regiment, but has since been adopted by the whole current-day Mercian Regiment. Ceremonies such as this touch the soul of a regiment, and Crich attracts not only a large military gathering but also a large civic representation. As the Regiment's livery company affiliate we are invited to lay one of the wreaths at the ceremony, a duty undertaken this year by Bowyer Liveryman Simon Linford.

Water Music 300 on the Thames

On Monday evening 17 July 2017 the Bowyers' Company hired a boat on the Thames for 70 of us to enjoy a black-tie celebration of the exact 300th anniversary of the first performance of Handel's 'Water Music', which had taken place on the river on 17 July 1717 for King George I.

Our boat was the MV Avontuur IV from Westminster Pier, with live string quintet on board conducted by the eminent Director of Music at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Dr Andrew Earis. The Water Music was brilliantly played for us during a champagne reception on the upper deck (luckily it was a very fine evening), and then played again after the 3-course supper we enjoyed on the lower deck, as the boat trip culminated a splendid and memorable evening by retracing King George I's route up to Chelsea and back.
