Bowyer Events First Quarter 2016

Wax Chandlers' Hall

We held a most enjoyable Court & Livery Dinner on January 21st at Wax Chandlers' Hall, a new venue for many of us. It was attended by 45 members, joined by our principal guest for the evening, Lt Col Mark 'Frosty' Ellwood MBE, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion of the Mercian Regiment. As a result of ceremonies at the preceding Court meeting, we also happily welcomed two new Freemen into the Company, Nigel Heilpern and William Mills, and celebrated the progression to the Livery of Professor Jonathan Bowman-Perks MBE, Dr John Manley, Mark Powell and Col Adrian Walton MBE TD DL.

On March 11th the Master, Wardens, Clerk and half a dozen other members represented the Bowyers at the annual United Guilds Service in St Paul's Cathedral, where the Bishop of London was in fine oratorical form, offering 'a jobbing bishop's four rules for life': Aim High, Be Generous, Stay Grounded, Build Relationships. After the service, the Bowyers joined a dozen members of the Water Conservators' Company for a very enjoyable lunch in one of the Guildhall dining rooms.

Bowyer Events Second Quarter 2016

The first in our exciting programme events for April, May and June is our annual St George's Banquet, being held this year on Wednesday April 20th in the grand setting of Fishmongers' Hall. Over 110 members and their guests are already booked in, but It's a large hall and The Master would welcome any additional members and their guests who would like to come too, for what should be a special evening,

Gala Dinner for the Mercian Regiment

On Monday May 16th we have the Bowyers' Hall City Walk, on which the Upper Warden will bring alive the origins of the Bowyers' Company in the 1300s and its heyday through till the Great Fire. We start with a toast to our great benefactor James Wood at St Nicholas Cole Abbey, then visit the sites of 'Bowyer Row' where the Company was founded, and the Bowyers' Halls of the 1500s, before adjourning to Finch's Pub for supper.

Then on Thursday June 2nd the Master's term of office culminates with a Charity Fund-Raising Gala Banquet at the Honourable Artillery Company, in aid of the Mercian Regiment Benevolent Fund. Each table of ten will include a decorated serving Mercian soldier, the Mercian Regiment drummers will beat a tattoo, and the Regiment's ram mascot, Private Derby XXXI, will be on parade.

The new book

A beautiful new coffee-table book just published, 'The 100 Best Stained Glass Sites in London', includes St Botolph Bishopsgate and the Bowyers' Window there, particularly noting its striking modern design by Nicola Kantorowicz. The window was consecrated by the Bishop of London in 1997 to mark the restoration of the church after the damage caused by the St Mary Axe and Bishopsgate bombs of 1993.

The window was the brainchild of Bowyer Past Master Christopher Ballenden (1992-94), who, together with Clerk Alastair Black (1985-94), identified the young designer, commissioned the window and raised the cost by donations from Bowyer members.

Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of the book may do so directly from the author, Caroline Swash, at 106 Willoughby House, Barbican EC2Y 8BL, enclosing a cheque for the reduced price of £27.50, made out to 'Malvern Arts Press Ltd'.

Andy Barnsdale

We are sad to report the death of Court Assistant Andrew Barnsdale, peacefully in the early hours of March 20th. Andy was 67; he had been a Liveryman of the Bowyers' Company since 1980, a Court Assistant since 1989, and a long-serving chairman of our Archery Committee.

The family have decided on a very small funeral for family and close friends. The Master is Godfather to one of Andy's daughters and will also represent the Company. Donations to Macmillan may be made via www.reynoldsfunerals.co.uk by clicking on "Donations" and typing "Barnsdale."
