Sword Presented to 2 Mercian RSM, Thursday 21 May

At an informal ceremony held in the Warrant Officers and Sergeants' Mess at The Dale Barracks, Chester on Thursday 21 May, the RSM of the 2nd Battalion of The Mercian Regiment, WO1 Mr Paul Muckle, was presented with a new ceremonial Infantry Sword. The presentation was made by the Worshipful Company of Bowyers, whose Master, the Rev'd John Hayton TD, spoke of how honoured the Bowyers were to have the Mercians as their affiliated regiment, and how delighted they were to be able to provide the sword to the RSM of 2 Mercian in the person of Paul Muckle.

The sword had been lovingly made by Pooley Sword, the leading cutlers of military and ceremonial swords for the armed forces, whose director is Robert Pooley, also coincidentally a member of the Bowyers' Company. In accepting the sword on behalf of himself and all future RSMs of 2 Mercian, Paul Muckle thanked the Bowyers' Company, and said the sword, as well being used on ceremonial occasions, would be permanently displayed in a new glass case in the entrance hall of the Warrant Officers and Sergeants' Mess.

The whole mess was present for the ceremony, as were the outgoing Commanding Officer of 2 Mercian, Lt Col Paul 'Shove' Gilby, and his successor, Lt Col Ben Wilde. Also representing the Bowyers were Upper Warden Tony Kench and Charity Committee Chairman Mark Elliott, who is also a member of the Mercian Regimental Council.
